This year must the celebration of the first fifty years of the Consortium of Prosecco Superiore Conegliano Valdobbiadene D.O.C.G. This leads us to reflect on important moments that justify this recognition, on our traditions and nowadays the huge success of Prosecco wine and how it has become famous all over the world.

The boom of the Prosecco phenomenon is relatively recent compared to the centuries-long history of our land dedicate to vine growing; suitable for an ideal soil, climate and sun exposure to one of the oldest and rooted cultivation in Italy.

To go back to the origins of the presence in the area of Conegliano Valdobbiadene we should look back to Roman times. The first real trace of the vine cultivation in this area is the memorial stone of a Roman centurion which quotes “vendemmiales”, a special Roman celebration during harvesting. Then a painting representing the “Sunday Christ” dating back to the 12. century on the facade of the  church of San Pietro di Feletto, one of the jewels to visit, in the area, describes the works forbidden on a Sunday and among them also tools used in viticulture.In 1754 the word Prosecco is mentioned for the first time; from that moment written sources attesting wines produced in the area defined as “marca gioiosa et amorosa” (area full of joy and love) increase.  Not only do they mention excellent wines but also other products typical of the area and the natural and architectural beauty that can be admired here.Due to the importance and development of vine culture, in 1876 the oenological school was founded in Conegliano, the first of its kind in Italy. In the 1930s the first boundaries of the Prosecco production area were outlined and even today define the historical area of Conegliano Valdobbiadene D.O.C.G.

A very important date was the 7th June 1962 when 11 producers formed the first association to protect the area of Conegliano Valdobbiadene and in the year 1966 the Strada del Prosecco was founded (“Prosecco Road”), the first wine road recognized in Italy. In 1969 the area of Conegliano Valdobbiadene was recognized as a Controlled Denomination of Origin (D.O.C.) and finally on the 1st August of 2009 it became the 44th D.O.C.G. in Italy (Guaranteed and Controlled Denomination of Origin) the highest quality denomination  for wine in Italy. The Consortium has developed over the years and acts has a spokesman for all its members and has taken further active steps to promote the Prosecco image in Italy and abroad.

The map shows the current division of the entire production area of Prosecco divided into three denominations: the  D.O.C. extends to all the entire region of Friuli Venezia Giulia and almost the all of Veneto region, Verona and Rovigo excluded. The D.O.C.G. which maintains the same borders as its origins includes 15 municipalities in the historical area between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene. In 2010 the production area of Asolo Prosecco also obtained the D.O.C.G. recognition.

The historical and traditional area is becoming even more important thanks to producers who believe in this land, transforming grapes by hand and working with respect for the ecosystem of the vineyards. The Consortium is the first promoter of this commitment to our wonderful land, to everybody who lives and works here and whose who come from all over the world to visit our hills and taste our excellent wines.

The mission of each one of us, through our products, is to make the land known, rich in history and breathtaking landscapes drawn by the sloping and sweet hills where from generation to generation we cultivate the vines with love and devotion.

We celebrate the first 50 years with joy and also an awareness of  how far we still have to travel. Every goal we have achieved is another piece to help build the future, without forgetting the past and working to pursue the project based on three basic principles: protection of the consumer, promotion of the land and its main symbol, the wine, and environmental sustainability.

We celebrate and we toast together this first step hoping for a  future filled with success and satisfaction without losing sight of the essential values: people and the love for its land!
